Genesis 1:6

And God said: 'Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.' This is a Jewish translation.
Then God said, "Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters." This is a Christian translation, in particular NASB.

What is firmament? Webster’s defines it as ‘the vault or arch of the sky.
We could understand that as the atmosphere.
The Magistrates said, “Let there be an atmosphere in the midst of the water, to exist and separate the water from the waters.
