וְהָאָרֶץ הָיְתָה תֹהוּ וָבֹהוּ וְחֹשֶׁךְ עַל־פְּנֵי תְהֹום וְרוּחַ אֱלֹהִים מְרַחֶפֶת עַל־פְּנֵי הַמָּֽיִם׃

776---Ha-eretz – and to be firm, and the earth
1961--Hayatah – to exist, be or become, come to pass.
8414--Tohuw – To lie waste, a desolation, a desert, a worthless thing
922---Vabohuw – To be Empty, a vacuity, an undistinguishable ruin.
2822--Vachoshek – The dark, darkness, misery, destruction, death, ignorance, sorrow, wickedness
5921--Al – Above, over, upon, or against.
6440--Pani – The face (a pearl)
8415--Tehowm – An abyss, the deep.
7307--Ruwach – Wind, breath, life, anger, unsubstantiality, a region of the sky.
430---Elohim – Gods, magistrates, supreme
7363--Marachaphet – From, of, since, to brood, to be relaxed.
4325--Hamayim – water, juice, urine and semen.

The traditional translation of this passage goes as such: The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters.




2. Now the earth was astonishingly empty, and darkness was on the face of the deep, and the spirit of God was hovering over the face of the water.

The above is a Jewish translation of the same Scripture.

There are many other possible translations, all of them different from the traditional translation. Who is to say that the traditional translation is the correct one? In my opinion, this could even be a valid translation:

The earth became a desolate and undistinguishable ruin, and destruction was upon the face of the deep, and the anger of the magistrates brooded over the face of the water.

What if that is the correct translation?
